Teachers have tried this and are amazed when their classes don’t go feral like in the book.  It’s almost as if the book was supposed to be satire and not a treaty on the nature of humanity.

#tbf the dude wrote it to be a dick

yes. yes he did. i’m also gonna direct you to the real life ‘lord of the flies’ which occured in the 1960s, when six tongan schoolboys got stranded on a desert island for over a year before being rescued by an australian fisherman (who, it should be noted, later took on all six as crewmembers because the reason they were out in the first place was because they wanted to see the world, and named his ship the Ata after the island they were stranded on). nobody died. the only injuries that occurred were accidental, and when one of the boys broke his leg falling down a cliff, the others braced it and looked after him so well that it healed perfectly. if they argued, then they would literally go to opposite sides of the island until they’d cooled off. after leaving the island, they remained friends for the rest of their lives. here’s a photo of them as adults, with their rescuer (who is third from the left) and other members of his crew.

i read about this in rutger bregman’s human kind, a book i cannot recommend highly enough, but if you don’t want to go and read a whole book about the inherent goodness of humanity (which again, you really should) then the relevant excerpt can be found here.

What gets me about all the hate reviews of barbie coming from (conservative) men it’s that it’s remarkably tame when it comes to feminism ideas.

The main takeway from the movie is that patriarchy sucks for both men and women, but society makes it harder for women to meet unreachable expectations than men. Nothing groundbreaking, really. I’d argue every woman is even unconsciously aware of that. Heck, I’ve seen some takes than the movie shows that matriatchy is just as bad, since it doesn’t give place to the Kens, when in reality it’s just a reversal of the real world !

You know that meme showing on one side philosophers discussing and on the other a mother explaining to her baby something, to show the difference of intellectual level in discussions ? That’s how I see people on tumblr talking about the movie VS the dudebros takeways from Barbie. Like in reality it’s not even radical feminism. But the men are so mad for no reason

Something I found very interesting about the Barbie movie was the Ken’s mimicking of patriarchy. I’ve seen some comments putting it as a stance of men’s inherent desire to oppress women but would argue it much more reflects the socialization process many young boys experience that encourages them take on misogynistic views. The kens do not resent the Barbie’s. They’ve grown up in a society the Barbie’s run and the adore and love them. I think you could say that reflects the early stages of life for many boys where often the main role models they know are women, their mothers (as they often have a more involved role than fathers) and eventually their teachers, which women still make up the vast majority of early childhood educators.

The Kens also notably lack a sense of brotherhood at the start of the movie. And it isn’t until they’re in the real world our main Ken experiences positive male attention and approval (which is only due to him also being a man). It is that desire for approval from his male peers that initially drives him to believe in patriarchy.

There is of course also the underlying struggle of his unrequited feelings for Barbie, but none of the kens truly resent the Barbies. They don’t actually want them as oppressed servants. Yes they want their attention, but even during kendom we see them happiest on their cheesy guitar playing group date. They begin oppressing Barbie’s not because it’s what they actually want but rather it’s them mimicking the behaviour of men.

And that is why I think it makes such a great ode to the socialization of young boys to be misogynistic. Boys do not have an innate hatred for women, nor is it something they naturally grow into of their own fruition. But rather it’s a patterned of learned behaviours they in most cases initially mimic for the approval of other men or to gain attention, but overtime becomes a very real ideology then adopt and believe in and likely pass on.

I find the fact that the Barbie movie is simultaneously being criticized by the right as “too radical”, and criticized by the left as “too nice to men” and/or “too pandering”, quite funny, given that America’s WHOLE SPEECH was about how, no matter what women (like the director of the Barbie movie) do, it will simultaneously always be too little and too much.

Thinking about all those youtubers and streamers who generally stayed nonpolitical as not to alienate anyone but who absolutely could not handle it when that hogwarts game came out and their progressive audiences were telling them to maybe not play/review that one and they'd throw a fat tantrum like "no you don't get it it's my job this is the biggest game of the year I can't not play it" and now we're a few months along and fucking nobody is talking about it anymore cause it wasn't even good. Was it worth it
